Shin Splints

The condition known as shin splints is classically referred to as pain along the inside of the lower leg and most commonly affects runners.   The actual site of the injury can be muscle, tendon, bone or more commonly the connective-tissues which surround the muscles and bones, specifically the posterior tibialis muscle and the tibia itself.

Shin splints develop as a result of the repeated stresses from running, which then leads to larger forces being applied to the fascia, the fascial attachment to the bone, and finally to the bone itself.  The pain associated with shin splints is a result of fatigue and trauma to the muscle's tendons where they attach themselves to the tibia.

Causes of Shin Splints

• Exercising on hard surfaces
• Excessive uphill or downhill running
• Poor running mechanics
• Foot pronation
• Tight muscles in the lower leg
