Best Time of Day to Exercise

If your goal is to shed some pounds, kiss that snooze button goodbye. A new study has shown that exercising on a completely empty stomach burns more fat and can potentially stave off more weight gain than exercising at any other time of the day.

Scientists refer to this early morning, no-food-in-the-belly condition as “a fasted state.” In this study they found that exercising in this state improved glucose tolerance during a fat-rich diet. This means the body is prompted to burn more fat than simply burning calories from food intake. It does this while maintaining healthy insulin levels.
In the study, a group of young men changed their diet for a six week period. They added 30 percent more calories and 50 percent more fat than they had previously eaten on a normal basis. One third of the group remained sedentary. The other two thirds began a strenuous morning workout. One half of this group exercised after they ate breakfast, and the other half exercised before they ate.
At the end of the six weeks, the sedentary group predictably had put on some pounds. They had also developed insulin resistance and added new fat cells to their muscles. The men who exercised after breakfast had also packed on some weight, but less than the sedentary group. They also developed some insulin issues. However, the men who exercised on an empty stomach gained no weight and their insulin levels remained healthy. Their bodies were also burning more calories throughout the day than the other men.
The best and healthiest way to prevent an increase in body weight is to combine a healthy diet with a physically active lifestyle. However, if you find yourself having one or two cheat days loaded with junk food, an empty stomach, early morning workout is more effective than the same exact workout on a full stomach.
