In this short video, Breanne Kelley, DC discusses the causes, symptoms, and treatment options for Achilles tendonitis. She also discusses Airrosti’s approach to Achilles tendonitis and how we allow our patients to stay active during treatment.
The Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in the body. It is a band of tissue that connects your calf muscles to your heel bone and is used when you walk, run, and jump. It is also prone to tendonitis when overused.
Achilles tendonitis is an injury that occurs when the Achilles tendon becomes inflamed and irritated after extensive use. This inflammation inhibits the tendon’s ability to move and can cause sharp, intense pain near the back of the lower leg. Achilles Tendonitis is commonly known as Achilles Tendonosis or Achilles Tendonopathy.
There are two different types of Achilles tendonitis, insertional and non-insertional:
Insertional Achilles tendonitis occurs when the pain is located at the insertion point of the tendon where it attaches to the heel bone. Inflammation occurs in this area and is the cause of this unpleasant pain.
With insertional Achilles tendonitis, pain is often worst first thing in the morning or a day after activity.
In this case, pain is located in the middle of the tendon. Inflammation occurs in the middle of the tendon causes swelling and pain. This is common in active, younger people. Pain is often worst before or shortly after activity.
Achilles tendonitis typically develops when we push our bodies to do too much, too quickly. Achilles tendonitis most commonly occurs in runners and other athletes who have suddenly increased the intensity or duration of their training.
Below are a few of the risk factors associated with Achilles tendonitis.
The pain associated with Achilles tendonitis typically begins as mild heel pain. Sometimes pain and swelling are present in the back of the leg or above the heel. Any action that requires flexing the calf muscle may be painful.
Episodes of more severe pain may occur after prolonged running, stair climbing, or sprinting. You might also experience tenderness and stiffness, especially in the morning. These symptoms usually improve throughout the day as your body warms up.
When treating Achilles tendonitis, your doctor may perform a physical exam, a range of motion test, and order imaging tests to help rule out other conditions. Your doctor will recommend you take some time off to rest and heal, limit your physical activity, and modify your exercises as needed. Over-the-counter pain medications such as Ibuprofen are often recommended to curb any pain. Icing the affected area for 15 – 20 minutes at a time may also help reduce swelling and inflammation.
Depending on the severity of your injury, it may take several months to resolve the condition and return to your regular training schedule. With traditional healthcare solutions, the expected recovery times for Achilles tendonitis are 3-6 months for Insertional and four months for Non-insertional.
Other treatment options include orthotic inserts and physical therapy to strengthen the Achilles tendon and promote faster healing. With the help of professional rehabilitation experts, faster healing is a possibility.
Pain from Achilles tendonitis can be subdued with a few exercises that target the affected area. Just remember these are at-home exercises that should be a supplement to regular physical therapy. A few helpful Achilles tendonitis exercises are:
This stretch is great for mobility and helping regain movement in the ankle.
This band stretch can help you build up stability in the injured area.

Dr. St. Dizier is actively involved with my local sporting club, the Houston Lonestars Australian Rules Football Club. He has on several occasions presented himself at our events to detail how Airrosti goes about treating pain and injury. He inspired confidence in the group and I was encouraged to make an appointment after speaking with other club members who had already done so. I was suffering from Achilles tendonitis which limited my ability to run. Dr. St. Dizier outlined how long (ie. how many visits) he thought my treatment would take. He was spot on. Within two consultations, my pain had all but gone and I was back to performing at the level I was before seeing him. I found his treatment and advice most effective. The mobile app w...+ show moreas an excellent resource to consult between visits when I had exercises to do. The third visit was a check-up to confirm I was pain-free, and with no actual treatment required, I wasn’t charged for that appointment. If you have pain and or limited movement ,you can do no better than see Dr. St. Dizier at Airrosti.

Dr. Garza was great in helping me get over some Achilles pain from running. After receiving treatments and implementing the at-home exercising and icing, I was even able to be discharged earlier than anticipated. It was nice to receive a clear plan for my injury that started relieving my pain quickly. I will return here if other pain or injuries occur.

I injured my Achilles tendon, and the pain had been ongoing for about eight months. I found Airrosti online, watched a few videos on their website before deciding to make an appointment using their online system. After telling Dr. Trimmier how I initially injured my Achilles, he seemed to know exactly what to test to figure out what was causing my pain. I was given exercise homework and saw him in the office only three times, and my Achilles had improved tremendously. I hardly any pain and I had highly improved mobility. Sticking with my home exercises, I rarely have pain now.

Dr. Owens was amazing! I had severe Achilles tendinitis that was prohibiting me from basic walking and running in my favorite sport, tennis. Dr. Owens was gentle yet firm, got to the root of the problem, and worked around my insurance issues! She is definitely professional and worth the visit!

I've had chronic issues with my Achilles and most recently had issues for almost a year. I managed to continue to play tennis though it restricted my movement and was painful at times. I decided to give Airrosti a shot and after visiting Dr. Caitlin Jones there was almost immediate relief and was completely back to normal after several weeks. Thank you Dr. Jones!!!

I've been a long distance runner for many years, and have always come to the point of having to stop because of pain or an injury. This time was different! As the season started and workout intensity began, I noticed achilles pain developing and plantar fasciitis kicking in. I reached out to Airrosti, on a thirty minute intro call I was convinced that they had the expertise to help me out. I was assigned to Denyse R Jones, amazing human being and with immense knowledge and expertise working with athletes. She helped me get back on my feet without having to interrupt my training plan nor routine. Quickly she understood and came up with a recovery and strengthening plan. After approximately 5-6 sessions the pain was gone and I felt even mo...+ show morere stronger than before. Not only she helped but she also taught me how to take care of myself. Denyse clearly new what she was doing and empathized with me and process. Definitely worth it! Thanks.

I saw Dr. Hurta for 2 different injuries: Achilles tendinosis, which I had been unsuccessfully dealing with for more than 3 years, and calf strain. Both times Dr. Hurta provided me with the best care. He spotted the problem right away and proposed me a treatment plan integrated with targeted exercises to treat my condition and to prevent it from happening again. He was also always more than happy to address my questions and concerns. Best service I could imagine.

In January of 2021, I severely strained my right calf muscle doing weighted prowler pushes. It was painful to walk on for about a month, even with pulling back on my training/workouts. Being a full-time CrossFit coach and personal trainer, just the amount of walking around and movements with my clients would cause enough pain for me than working out or certain exercises were not an option. After 2 months of trying to rest/recover without outside help, I went to a physical therapy place in town. Once a week for five weeks I got dry needled and manually stretched out. The dry needling helped with the pain but did not completely take away the issue. My calf would still tighten up and cause enough pain that I avoided running, jumping, and tr...+ show moreiple extension movements. In September of 2021, my boss, Kyle Kasperbauer said that he had been working with Airrosti for his Achilles injury and suggested I look into them as well because I was still having issues. I filled out the intake form and set up a VIP chat. During that first meeting, Anthony listened to what initially happened, what I was currently going through and the limitations it was causing. He asked to see me in a couple of different positions to evaluate the differences between my two hips and legs. Immediately, he was convinced that was actually an issue with my right hip and not just my calf muscles. I was extremely pleased with how thorough he was with the evaluation and how he took the time to access my movements around the main source of my pain to find the actual cause. I started working with him the following week and within 2 weeks I was already noticing significant differences. Two and a half months later and I am already doing all of the movements that used to cause pain and discomfort. Before I started with Airrosti I was beginning to think I would just always have this issue and continually be in pain.

Dr. Friendt was the first chiropractor I ever visited, and he accurately diagnosed and treated a very bad case of acute Achilles Tendonitis. His calm and soothing demeanor helped me relax as he treated my injury. He also tells great stories! I remember being fascinated after I learned about his background. I had never met a former mortician before! Overall, Dr. Friendt was patient, kind, incredibly professional, and a joy to work with. His assistant was also amazing!

I have had Achilles problems for over a year. Thanks to Dr. Pavlich I am able to walk/jog again will little or no pain. The exercises are easy to follow online and the kit they sent me helped so much in my recovery. Dr. Pavlich was very friendly knowledgeable and encouraging through our visits. The program worked so well that we are done with virtual visits with just three sessions unless I need more help in the future. I highly recommend Airrosti and their Airrosti Remote Recovery program. I won’t lie I was skeptical, but am now a believer. Thank you Airrosti!

Dr. Rios gave me back a big part of my life. I’d been a regular runner for a long time, until my Achilles tendons started giving me trouble. It came on gradually over several years, until it got to the point that if I ran a single painful mile I’d be limping around in pain for several days afterward. During this time I went to several doctors, physical therapists, and specialists, with no improvement. The next step was going to be surgery, which I wanted to avoid. I pretty much gave up on ever running again. Decided to try Airrosti, and on my first visit I described the problem and Alex said, yeah, we can fix that. With everything I’d been through over about 20 years – yes, this was a chronic, long-term problem - I was skeptical,...+ show more but after one session I felt improvement. A couple more and I was back on the running trail. Dr. Rios really knows what she is doing. From your symptoms and her training and experience she is able to figure out what the underlying problem is. In my case she got it right the first time – surprise, it wasn’t actually the Achilles tendons. The myofascial release helps enormously - yeah, it hurts, but it’s bearable, and the more it hurts short-term, the more improvement you’ll feel later; totally worth it. But the exercises Alex and Matt will give you as homework are just as important to correct the underlying issues. Again, they were spot on. Bottom line, I’m running again, and it’s really, really great to have that back. Thanks, Alex! Since the first round of treatment a relatively small nagging problem with one ankle persisted; I held off on going back because I was afraid she wouldn’t be able to fix it. Silly me; after a few more sessions that was resolved. And then there was a shoulder injury that I was also unsure whether Airrosti could help, and she and Matt cleared that up, too. For comparison, I had a similar problem a few years ago with the other shoulder, and that took a solid two years to heal up on its own. For those keeping score, that makes her three-for-three. Dr. Rios is definitely my first choice for treatment of any kind of soft-tissue pain.

My CrossFit coach/owner recommended Airrosti right away when I experienced a scary tear in my Achilles connection to my calf muscles. As soon as I was seen and evaluated, Airrosti's professionals soothed my fears by applying immediate treatment and reassurance about the prognosis. Their focus on movement and manipulation was new and eye-opening to me, but always perfectly rational and logical. They gave me time to answer all of my questions as if I was the only patient they needed to be concerned with and made certain I was able to calm down enough to understand and participate in the beginning of the healing process. The care I received was down to earth and extremely compassionate. I felt comforted and I was able to focus on getting ba...+ show moreck on my feet as soon as possible.

A shout out and a BIG THANK YOU to Dr. Jason Bolen for treating my leg pain. I went in with intense leg pain around the Achilles area. I was super frustrated for not being able to run. Dr. Bolen patiently listened, assessed the injury and explained the treatment/rehab processes. After three treatments, I was running again. In fact, I was able to race a 10k and run 14 miles... pain-free!! I will continue to sing his praises, recommend family and friends to Airrosti and Dr. Jason Bolen. Please pass on my sincerely appreciate to Dr. Jason Bolen for being professional, kind and patience!

I had called my Orthopedic surgeon in dire need because my foot pain was so bad. I thought I was in need of plantar fasciitis release surgery, or so I thought. Little did I know I had more serious issues going on with my feet, I had tarsal tunnel syndrome, Achilles tendinitis, fallen arches & plantar fasciitis. I went for my 1st treatment and yes I was nervous, I knew it was going to hurt! I walked in limping and walking out not limping and could do all things I couldn't do when he assessed me before treatment 🙌🏼 Two days after I went to Arizona for a week, even hiked 3 miles one day with no pain, I did all given exercises twice a day with still no issues. I went back for my second treatment and to my surprise he discharged me!!!!!...+ show more!!!! I had kept up with my rehab so well I hadn't had any issues for 2 weeks. Dr. Daly and Crystal will never know how much I appreciate them, they have given me my life back! Airrosti Rocks!

I can't say enough positive things about Dr. Latiolais. I was very skeptical about Airrosti therapy and went as a last resort for relief from severe Achilles tendonitis. She immediately put me at ease and explained everything to me on the first visit. Amazingly I had immediate relief on the first visit. She was patient and thorough with teaching me exercises. She is always on time with appointments and greets you with a genuine warmness. I have now recommended her to several friends and coworkers. I won't hesitate to call upon her again and feel very fortunate to have found Dr. Latiolais.

I have had Achilles Tendinitis for over a year. I have tried exercises for stretching out the fascia from my foot to my hamstrings with some improvement but still suffered sharp pain every morning! One of my patients, Heather Wedding, came into our office wearing an AIRROSTI logo shirt and I asked if she thought AIRROSTI therapy would help me. She explained that my tendinitis is exactly the Soft Tissue Injury ( the 3 last letters in AIRROSTI ) that they've had success with and asked if I was ready to give it a try. That same day I was able to make my first visit with Jenay Zelaya DC. Jenay is very personable, knowledgeable and competent in her AIRROSTI skills. She evaluated me and started Myofascial release. I have to admit that at first...+ show more I wondered what I had signed up for, but the results of our first session were amazing! I then had 2 more sessions and can honestly say that I'm pain-free. I have an occasional twinge, but nothing like before my treatment. I'm very happy that I tried AIRROSTI and will recommend it to my friends, family and patients! If I ever have a soft tissue injury I will definitely go to Dr. Jenay Zelaya right away at AIRROSTI.

Michelle, I wanted to follow up with you and tell you about my fantastic experience with Airrosti! I went to the location in Las Colinas. Miranda and Harley were awesome! And sure enough, they fixed my Achilles heel injury – which I had had for over 10 years….that a doctor told me would never really be fixed without surgery that would require severing and reattaching my Achilles tendon – in just 3 visits. I’ve stuck with the exercises and I’m running pain-free now for the first time in a loooooong time. I’ve shared that story with everyone in my office and just yesterday with our executive team when telling them why we’re adding this to our benefits package. Thank you for letting me try it out. I have used the words ‘life...+ show more-changing’ to describe the experience. The treatment was far from pain-free but the results certainly were. Have a great day! Matt

I'm a pro ultra runner from the UK, currently preparing for a solo 750-mile speed world record attempt in Antarctica. I'd been suffering from Achilles problems for the last year and no conventional medical treatment was working. After 3 Airrosti sessions, my Achilles is pain-free and I'm starting up my usual training again. The team has been incredible and I'm so grateful for their help and support in getting me to the South Pole.

(Actually sending this testimonial in regards to my 13-year-old daughter) We brought her to Dr. Savoy after she had an accident and tripped at a softball tournament. She had been suffering from pain that just wouldn't go away. We were first told that she had Achilles tendinitis. Since she plays travel fastpitch, it was very frustrating for her not to be able to do what she loves the most. The pain was just getting the best of her. Well, once we decided to give Airrosti a try, since nothing was working, I have to admit that I was hesitant (it was kind of hard to believe that she would be ""pain free"" after suffering for almost one month). Well, glad we tried it. After 3 sessions, my daughter is now back to her old self, even better actua...+ show morelly! It was obvious that Dr. Savoy truly cared about my daughter's well being. Once he treated her, and along with Kristina's therapy, my daughter is now back to playing the sport she loves, pain free! Both Dr. Savoy and Kristina epitomize the true meaning of health care providers that care. Oh, and forgot to point out that it was actually a sprain that she had - Dr. Savoy was able to figure out what was really wrong with her. As long as you follow the treatment plan and do your part, Airrositi really does work. I am so glad that we decided to take our daughter there, and I'm especially glad to have crossed paths with Dr. Savoy and Kristina. If in the future we have a situation like this again, I'm definitely going back.

After suffering a terrible ankle sprain and repeated reinjury I developed achilles tendonitis. Two years of pain and swelling limited my quality of life. I was unable to exercise and even experienced pain with day to day walking. I was depressed and put on a lot of weight due to inactivity. Xrays were done, pain meds were prescribed and even arthritis medication was used. Nothing worked. Finally, I took a chance that therapy could help. After only two visits, the pain had lessened to nearly 90 percent. After a couple of months, I have NO pain! I am back in the gym consistently working out and feel stronger than ever. I am down 20 lbs, no longer taking pain medication or wearing any supports or braces and feeling so blessed. I learned about Airrosti from Facebook. I found Dr. Arnold based on his experience and proximity to my home. I went in for treatment on my Achilles tendon. Dr. Arnold assessed me and went to work on my leg. What I liked was the level of education that came with each session. Dr. Arnold and the staff always told me the objectives of the session, demonstrated proper stretching techniques and gave me exercises to do at home. I'm a part time fitness instructor and I've been telling everyone I can about how great Airrosti has been for me. My only regret is that I didn't find them sooner!

Dr. Ryabinov is amazing, and has helped every single one of our family members! It started several years ago when my husband had to stop running due to an achilles issue and thought his running days were over. Dr. Ryabinov took care of that issue. I had suffered for years with plantar fasciitis and Dr. Ryabinov got me out of those unattractive orthotic shoes. All three of my children participated in competitive Irish Dancing and would inevitably suffer debilitating injuries weeks before major competitions due to increased practices, and Dr. Ryabinov saved 1 Oireachtas (regional Irish Dance competition) and 2 World competition opportunities for our family by working on feet, knee, hip & back pain. Any pain, any where, on anyone...Dr. Ryab...+ show moreinov's got you covered!
