Join Airrosti’s Jenay Zelaya, DC as she discusses the common causes of various types of foot pain. Zelaya explains how muscle imbalances in the feet can also cause pain up the kinetic chain. She also discusses traditional treatment method options and goes over how Airrosti’s hands-on approach can treat most common foot injuries in as few as three visits (based on patient-reported outcomes).
Feet are flexible structures made of bones, joints, muscles, and soft tissues that allow us to perform most daily activities. From walking and standing upright to playing sports and doing gymnastics, your feet go through a lot to keep you mobile.
Your feet are made of many complex parts and act as shock absorbers for the rest of the body during movement. As a result, your feet become easily susceptible to painful injuries when they are not given proper care.
You’re more likely to experience foot pain if you:
Foot pain could be caused by a recent acute injury, such as a fall. It can also be the result of a chronic condition that has slowly gotten worse. Most foot problems are sustained from mechanical issues such as overuse, improper footwear, or arch issues such as flat feet.
Some common causes of foot pain are:
Foot pain tends to be localized in the ball of the foot, arch, top of the foot, or in the toe joints. However, an injury to the foot can also cause pain in the ankle, knee, hip, and the low back. Foot and ankle pain are often described as either sharp, dull, tingling, or burning. Some injuries that cause foot pain and inflammation can also develop other symptoms such as weakness, bruising, swelling, and tenderness.
Your doctor may ask you about your medical history and if you’ve had a previous foot injury. They may also request an x-ray or MRI to help rule out what conditions may be causing the pain.
Depending on the cause, treatments can vary. Foot pain treatment may include conservative care, such as using shoe inserts to provide arch support or prescribing nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications for pain relief. Your doctor may also recommend wearing a boot or brace to keep your foot stable during your recovery.
Treatment options for more chronic or severe foot pain can become less conservative and take longer to recover. In some cases, your doctor may suggest an injection or surgery. These procedures can be costly, and recovery may require physical therapy.
Proper foot care can help prevent many common causes of general foot pain. If you notice your feet are aching more than usual, check your footwear first. Make sure you’re wearing shoes that fit well and provide proper arch support.
If you spend a lot of time walking or running, you may experience lingering foot soreness. Try soaking your feet in warm water or getting a foot massage to help relax and loosen up the muscles.
Chronic foot pain can cause recurring problems, keeping you from enjoying many of your favorite activities. If you suffer from chronic foot pain, consult with an Airrosti Provider today.

Dr. Jade Moore changed my life! After suffering from foot pain and not finding any relief, I visited her, and after a few treatments was pain-free. She listens, knows her stuff, and treated those muscle/tendon areas to relieve the pain. The rehab home exercises have an added benefit, too! I highly recommend this group to everyone!

I can’t say enough about how amazing Dr. Garza is at Airrosti. I fractured my foot and talus bone (ankle) on July 1st and was not able to walk for over four months. I came to Dr. Garza on a knee scooter for my rehab treatment in October, and eight sessions later, I am walking with no pain and in sneakers. I immediately felt relief after just the 1st session. He is a miracle worker and I highly recommend him!

In March I started having a lot of pain in my left foot and heel. I began treatment with Dr. Siracusa in April. I explained to him that it was hindering my day to day life and my training. I told him that I was signed up to run a Spartan on May 20th so I needed the pain gone. My last appointment was on May 8th and since then I have been almost completely pain free. Due to the treatment I was able to complete my Spartan 5K this past Saturday in Austin! I was pain free during the entire race and continue to be pain free two days later!

During a routine visit to my Doctor, I told her of my orthopedic surgeon's desire to operate on my foot. She recommended Dr. Kante with Airrosti. It took 3 visits to put me on a path away from surgery through rehabilitation. Dr. Kante is kind, gentle and knowledgeable. Ben is part of her staff that worked with me on strength and balance. I shared another issue I have and she has provided me with a referral for another Doctor. Dr. Kante with Airrosti is one of the best medical experiences I have had in my long life.

I went to see Dr. Scott on 4/24/23 due to ongoing pain from a fractured hairline on my right foot since October 2023. During my visit, Dr. Jones took the time to listen and assess my issue by asking many questions to ensure I’d receive the right treatment. He provided me with a set of home exercises which he modeled to assist with my pain management level and created a goal of me being able to walk for an hour without pain with the next continued visits and home exercises. Also, one cool thing I like is that their app allows me to see the exercises Dr. Jones left me as homework and tracks my visits. I definitely recommend Dr. Jones.

I love running. My friend and I would run 5 miles every week. Unfortunately for a while, my foot started hurting more and more, to the point where I had to stop running. I decided to see Alfred Sundquist at Airrosti and he and the team helped me get back on my feet (hardy har har). After 3 visits, my toe felt better. Over the next few months, I ramped up my weekly running. These past few weeks I've run 13.1 miles every Monday! And my toe doesn't even hurt. I can't thank Dr. Sundquist and Airrosti enough! Running was a huge part of my life and I'm so glad it is again.

On my first visit with Brittany, my foot was in a terrible condition. It was swollen, burning and alot of pain. In 1 visit with Brittany my foot improved tremendously. She knows what she is doing. She gave me exercises that improved my plantar fasciitis. On top of that, Brittany is a very kind and warm human being who truly loves her work and truly cares about her patients. If you have pain go see her first before getting on medication. You can avoid alot of unnecessary side effects if you try Airrosti. This location is perfect. Easy to get in and out.

I've been dealing with foot pain for so long that I just learned to cope with it until one day it became so bad that I had to leave work. I went to so many doctors and through so many medications I thought there was no hope.... until I was referred to Airrosti where I met Dr. Robert Garza. The BEST EXPERIENCE EVER! He walked me through the treatment and exercises, explained every detail! Every visit I left better than I came! 10 out of 10 Highly recommend and I will be back for any pain or injuries in the future.....

After months of pain in my left foot, that was keeping me from my normal exercise routine, my friend recommended trying out Airrosti. Dr. Brittani Young and Erica were so incredibly helpful! Dr. Young worked on my foot each visit and Erica walked me through all the exercises I needed to make sure I was doing (and explained why it was so important). I was able to get back to running and my normal exercise routine within 3 visitsI wish I would have made an appointment sooner! 10/10 highly recommend!

Dr. Nino has been spectacular and somehow was able to get me right back onto my two feet from multiple pains I've been trying to resolve for an extended period of time. Tele worked for me and Dr. Nino was very responsive to all my questions. It was also very educational and at the appropriate time showed me visuals to help understand the mechanics behind the treatment and what the root cause is. You're awesome!

As a restaurant chef, my forearms, shoulders, and feet ached on a daily basis, but it took a 16-in diameter steel wok to put both my arms out of commission—thankfully not for good! Dr. Simon & Mercedes are a terrific duo who never gave up on my healing and rehabilitation. I basically suffered “tennis elbow” in both of my arms when I first started therapy with Airrosti. Weekly sessions with Doc & Mercedes at the Houston location changed my life and allowed me to return to the kitchen again. Over the years, as the commercial kitchen life reared its ugliness in the form of shoulder and foot pain, it was truly a relief to know that I wasn’t alone. Thanks, Doc! Thank you, Mercedes! 3 podiatrists, 2 orthopedics, and 2 surgeries later led me to finally find a doctor who was willing and able to listen to my case and my story. I have been dealing with debilitating foot pain for years and thanks to Dr. Garza and his staff, I now have a plan in place to keep my pain at a bearable level. Throughout all my appointments and treatments Dr. Garza made sure I was comfortable and understanding of my diagnosis, treatment, and rehab exercises. To make it easier on me, he also speaks Spanish perfectly, so it was a very welcoming experience. To those looking for a doctor who listens, cares, and provides great care to his patients, set an appointment with Dr. Garza! Thank you Dr. Garza for all of your help!

I had trouble burning sensation in my left foot and a lot of problems with my lower back. Dr. Garza saw me 5 times. The treatment coupled with the exercise regimen has really helped. To be honest the pain has worn me down. I will continue the exercises and the strengthening of my core. I am grateful for the rapid progress and look forward to more improvement. I highly recommend this program. It’s a must to do all the exercises.

I suffered a stress fracture in my foot around 6 months ago and have been dealing with multiple issues since the incident. Despite the fracture healing fully I have not been able to dance consistently since. Dancing has been one of my passions that my life has revolved around for the past few years, and not being able to dance has been the most depressing event I’ve ever gone through in my life. Despite seeing my Chiro, Podiatrist, and Message Therapist consistently none of them have been able to help me fully recover. I honestly thought I wasn’t going to be able to return to the sport that has saved my life. That was until I was referred to Dr. Owens who was able to explain why I was dealing with the issues that I was, and expertly ...+ show moredescribed how to rectify them. Within the first visit, I felt the immediate pain relief and their rehabilitation program has been extremely effective. He was familiar with my style of dance and many other sports and made me feel as at home as I could possibly be. I couldn’t be more grateful to have met this man and his team because they gave me hope when I legitimately thought there was none. One thing I’ve also noticed with Airrosti is there not in the business to adopt you. They want you to heal to the point where you don’t have any more pain so they aren’t trying to squeeze money out of you with multiple visits. Within the first two appointments, I’ve seen a significant difference with the pain/issues I have and have been told I only need one more visit to make sure I’m good to go rather than being recommended to go consistently over the next few months. I would recommend ANYONE dealing with a sports injury to Airrosti (and specifically Dr. Owens) since they have been the only ones to help me through this traumatic experience.

I was in severe pain for years! Between my left foot and my right hip. I knew I was going to have surgery on my foot and wanted to start therapy on my hip before. Even though it was tough work, both in and out of the office, it was worth it! I recommend Dr. Levick to anyone I know that needs PT. I can move, bend and walk with minimal pain now!

I think I stepped on a lego accidentally when my child left it on the floor after playing and got hurt in my ankle. I had a pain of around 5 (on a scale of 1 to 10) and I didn't even go to any feet doctor, just came to Airrosti and my wife is already an established patient with pain reduction success. Dr. Garcia and Coach Charles addressed my pain very promptly and now it is around 1 (just after 3 visits). Thank you very much both and everything you did helped my pain.

Training for my first half marathon and pretty new to long distance running. In my late 20’s, gradually increasing my mileage, I cross train, and try my best to prevent any injuries. Went for a run one Monday and had some significant pain in my foot. RICE’d my foot until that Sunday and went for a run. Immediately had the same pain in my foot. I’m freaking out. I have no idea how to fix this but know it’s gotta be fixed. IM RUNNING THAT HALF. Searched around for recommendations on Facebook running group, and saw Airrosti suggested more than anything. Airrosti calls me after I submit a form online, the lady looks up offices near me, and we pick one that was convenient. Insurance covers majority of the cost. SUPER EASY. Office was ...+ show moreeasy to find and I waited maybe 30 seconds at the most before Dr.Hilton came to greet me. He listens to what I say, watches me run, and tells me what he can do to help. So far I’ve done 3 visits within a two week period, and was able to run 4 miles pain free with in a week. After two weeks I ran 8 miles with no problems!

I was originally looking for another foot doctor, but my insurance said they partnered with Airrosti, and the co-pay was less than a specialist if I wanted to give it a try. Yes I was leery at first, I mean, who makes pain go away in 3 appointments..... well Airrosti does. I did have more than 3 appointments but my pain was severe. I had a prior foot surgery back in October 2018, I had a heel spur removed. When I was wearing the boot after surgery during my "healing" time, my tendons, ligaments and muscles just seemed to get stuck or lodged and didn't want to move or stretch at all. My pain was in my ankle around the back of my heel and up my leg both on the outside and inside of my leg. Yes I did have more than 3 appointments but betwee...+ show moren the pain management and the therapy with Dr. Traylor and Anne, and the taping, I have very little to almost no more pain. I will look at Airrosti going forward before going to another specialist. I have also recommended them to several co-workers as well. They are the BEST!

21 years on active duty in The United States Marine Corps, and the last 11 years as a Cincinnati Cop started to finally catch up with me, physically. Courtesy of my time in The Corps, I developed some habits of overtraining, because that's the only way to train! Due to this and an injury, my feet began to ache. First just aggravating, off and on, here and there. Then it became almost consent, and more intense. It began to affect my sleep, and even my focus at work (not good). Because I retired from The Marine Corps, I went to the VA to seek assistance. After seeing their Podiatrist, and then two separate ones from the civilian sector, it was believed to be a nerve issue, then a back issue. Both were found to be incorrect through Electrom...+ show moreyography and MRI's. So after nearly 18 months of dealing with the pain, still training and working through it, but steadily getting worse, the main Podiatrist and I decided surgery was the next step. Surgery! Worst case scenario for me. It would've caused a break in training, and required me to be off the street and on the desk for CPD. WORST CASE SCENARIO!!! Then during casual discussion with my wife, she mentioned a co-worker who had severe foot pain years ago and was recommended to Airrosti for treatment. According to her, she was pain free in three visits. To be honest, my first thought was "well there may be a difference in what we consider pain, and a definite difference in what we do for a living". So I didn't have any faith that this was for me, and that it was going to be a waste of time. Time that I could have already started my recovery from surgery. However, I scheduled an appointment, based off my wife's friend and a recommendation from my Podiatrist. I showed up early, they were ready and professional, got right to it. Dr Browning was motivated and explained everything he wanted to do, and how he was going to do it. Mostly, all I understood was, "I can fix it". Of course, in my head, I was thinking what else would he say? By the end of the first session I knew this was something different. Dr Browning's "attack" on the soft tissue, muscles, ligaments, range of motion, stretches, balance, was intense. I say "attack" jokingly. Its more of a reflection of his focus on solving the issue. I have been to see Dr Browning four times over the last month and a half. Surgery has been cancelled. Not postponed, cancelled. Training has got back to the level I enjoy and require for the job I have. The pain has disappeared. Even a fellow Cop commented one day about 3 or 4 weeks ago, "Hey, I notice you aren't limping". I didn't even notice it, because I had stopped focusing on the pain in my feet and got back to focusing on what I am paid to focus on. Now I'm not going to tell you I understand how he did it, but he did it. Exactly what he said he was going to do, day one, "I can fix it". I recommend anyone dealing with any sort of pain, neck, shoulder, back, legs, or feet, give this place a shoot. I was skeptical, wasn't sure it was for me. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I've made in a long time. I can't imagine anyone coming here for relief of any pain issues, leaving disappointed. Top notch. Professional. Focused. Extremely proficient. Ron Geisler CPD D4

I want to thank Dr. Terra Schanzenbacher, in March of this year I had very bad pain in my right heal. I had gone to a Podiatrist, but shots were all my options besides surgery. I was not up for that I would have to be out for at least 8 weeks. They recommended Airrosti, which I had already heard of them since my son played sports and we had already taken him and it worked. My husband had also had a shoulder injury and he also went to Airrosti which he is great now also, so I made my appointments and I have had a great outcome. I am able to do whatever I want, Walk, Run, everyday life things. I owe it all to Dr. Terra. If you have second doubts about this treatment please change your mind and try it out. I have recommended my Boss and a C...+ show moreoworker for two different injury's and they thanked me for doing this. Thank Goodness for AIRROSTI 2017

I had horrible foot pain and we had a scheduled climb with my entire family within the month. Dr. Myles helped me with the pain so that I could prepare and climb the Grand Tetons with my family. We made it to the top and I carried my therapy ball with me!

I went to see Dr. Miller for what appeared to be a problem with my left foot and she was able to determine that it was a much larger issue, leading all the way up to not having strength in my hip as well as tightness in my calf muscles. I went to see Dr. Miller because I started to enjoy running and I was having trouble going past four to five miles without extreme foot pain. With the treatments and following the exercises Dr. Miller prescribed, I was able to finish my first Marathon this October. I was able to not only complete the marathon but I was able to train injury free and really enjoy the process.

Dr. Latiolais is a life saver. I have suffered foot pain for about 5 years now. To the point I had difficulty walking and it was affecting my daily life. I never knew when I would be able to walk without pain and was unable to plan any form of activity that required a lot of walking. I went to a podiatrist that gave me an injection in my foot, no relief. I went to my regular doctor, no answers I went to a spine doctor that referred me to a pain mgmt doctor. After 2 injections in my back still no relief. After 1 visit to Dr. Latiolais I was able to walk again with NO PAIN. I haven't been able to do this for 5 years. Dr. Ahlfinger helped me a lot - THANK YOU! I developed excruciating arch pain in both feet while training for a rucking event. I think this was brought on by increasing my distance and ruck weight too fast. I'd never had an issue with arch pain before, and it hurt with every step. Dr. Ahlfinger thought it was related to the posterior tibial tendon which then also lead to some plantar pain. The treatment itself was more painful than I'd anticipated and involved fascia work on my arch and along my shin, but it really made a difference. She worked on the right foot/leg the first day, and that night I could tell a significant improvement on the right side compared to the left side. I received a total of three treatments which enabled me to g...+ show moreet back to my training with paces that matched or exceeded my per mile pace prior to the onset of the arch pain. Since my Airrosti treatment, I have still had some minor tightness in my arches and calves from time to time, but nothing that has interfered with my training, and it continues to show steady improvement. I continue to do my at-home therapy of foam rolling, stretching, and ankle mobility to hopefully avoid ever going through that again!! Thanks, Dr. Kayla!

I went to Airrosti with a bad foot and also a shoulder issue. Hearing I was seeing a chiropractor for my issues gave me a little concern. I don’t believe in manipulations at all. Boy was I wrong about what they can do! Dr. Caussey was very open about the treatment and I had a hard time to believe that the pain I was suffering with could be alleviated in as little as 3 visits! After the massage with Dr. Causseys “magic thumbs”, I met with the exercise therapist, Betty Gutierrez, to go over some exercises to do at home. The night of the first visit I did have some discomfort, which I was told might happen, but nothing that I couldn’t handle and I did my at home therapy faithfully. My shoulder pain which I suffered with for months w...+ show moreas gone after one treatment! I did have about 5-6 treatments for my foot but I will tell you that this is the first time I have walked without any pain at all. I absolutely loved the care and treatment I received. I highly recommend that if you have any pain issues that you set up an appointment with Airrosti for the care you deserve I will definitely use them again if I have any other pain issues that need resolving.

I was diagnosed with MS in 1995 and have been living with ongoing pain ever since. Even after an ankle surgical procedure in 2010, a sudden pain under my foot began in 2015 and had progressed over time. Recently my husband has been receiving treatment at your facility with a successful outcome, which prompted me to schedule an appointment for myself. With the assistance of Dr. Luna in just a weeks time, my pain level decreased from and 8 to a level 3. Within the second treatment my pain level is now less than 1, and no pain by the 3rd session; with still no pain to this day. I am truly amazed how quickly my pain was alleviated and am completely grateful on how warm, prompt, and inviting the staff and environment is.

So, you know that song "Never Gonna Dance Again" by George Michael?? Yeah, that's how I felt! Ha! A dance injury (bone bruise) had put me out of commission for about a year! I was having to tape my foot and go crazy on the tiger balm just to make it through a performance. The injury soon spread to my other side and this is when I went in to see Dr. Rios at Airrosti. She. Was. Brutal. (in a totally good way!!) I had been doctors and therapist for sports injury, but Dr. Rios just jumped right in after seeing what the problem was. The super deep tissue and trigger point treatment helped loosen up my leg...for the first time in months I had some mobility back!!! Laurie is a very knowledgeable Airrosti provider. She is very educated in the human body and how it performs. She tries to find the "root" of the problem to try and treat the injury. She does everything that she can to preserve your current fitness program while rehabilitating your injury. I have come to her with 3 injuries in a span of 10 years and she always helps me so much. I always feel very confident referring her too injured friends or people that I coach, as well. They always give me good feedback regarding her care. I recently attended one of the CrossFit regionals as a volunteer and was lucky enough to receive treatment from Dr Hillary Owen whilst there. I was recently diagnosed with osteoarthritis in both knees and have been struggling with mobility, this was aggravated by the hours spent on my feet volunteering at the regionals. Dr Owen treated me for a good length of time, identifying the issues that are causing my difficulties, pain and aggravating the OA. She spent time educating me on how I can help myself and how I can mobilize myself daily so thy I can live my life with OA - the OA is not going away but there is much I can do to reduce the pain levels. As a roller derby player, I'm always nursing some kind of injury. I've seen Dr. Clements for everything from a sprained wrist, to mysterious foot pain, to an overworked hip flexor. He does a great job of diagnosing the problem and keeping me out of the doctor's office and off pain meds. Airrosti treatments are a great value because of the combination of hands-on treatment and physical therapy exercises and stretching to help continue recovery.
