Join Airrosti’s Anthony Pavlich, PT, DPT, as he discusses the different causes of hip pain and common signs of hip conditions like hip bursitis, IT band syndrome, and hip impingement. Learn more about traditional hip pain treatment methods and how Airrosti can help relieve hip pain in as few as three visits (based on patient-reported outcomes).
Hip pain and stiffness is a common condition treated at Airrosti. The hip is one of the largest joints in the body. To function correctly and with full range of motion, the ligaments, muscles, and fascia surrounding the joint must be working in unison. To know how to best treat hip pain, you should understand how it occurs, what symptoms to look out for, and what kind of treatment may be best for you.
The hip joint is designed to withstand repeated motion and a fair amount of wear and tear. This ball-and-socket joint allows for fluid lower body movements. While many causes of hip pain can arise from the joint itself, there are numerous structures surrounding the hip that can also be the source of pain.
Untreated acute trauma is often the cause of hip pain, but any source of inflammation may cause discomfort in the hip area. Pain is one of the symptoms of inflammation, along with swelling, warmth, and redness; together these are signals and symptoms that a problem may exist.
Aside from an acute injury, some other causes include overuse injuries in which muscles, tendons, and ligaments can become inflamed. Overuse of the hip can also wear away the cartilage in the hip joint, causing arthritis. Common hip problems caused by strain and overuse include hip tendonitis/tendinitis, hip bursitis, and hip flexor strain.
You may also experience referred pain from other structures outside the hip joint. This means that, while the hip hurts, the problem may originate elsewhere, such as Snapping Hip Syndrome being actually being caused by the iliotibial band.
Depending on the condition that’s causing your hip pain, you may feel discomfort in various parts of your body, including:
Signs of an inflammatory condition like tendonitis or bursitis often include:
The treatment of pain or discomfort depends on the cause. If hip pain is associated with activities like power walking or running, resting from that activity, or switching to lower impact activities may be helpful. Implementing activities like yoga can help, as it often includes stretches for hips that can improve mobility and reduce pain by stretching the soft tissues around the area.
Through simple preventative stretches and exercises, you can avoid many of the problems commonly associated with hip and hip flexor injuries, as well as joint pain from referred injuries throughout the body. If your hip pain is a result of overuse, your doctor will likely recommend rest, anti-inflammatory medications, or physical therapy. You should always consult with your doctor about what treatment options are best for you.
Hip pain is a nonspecific complaint that requires a musculoskeletal professional, like an Airrosti Provider, to find the underlying cause of all the many potential conditions or injuries.
While general hip pain often responds well to home remedies and rest, Airrosti can help rapidly resolve the source of pain in an average of 3 visits (based on patient-reported outcomes) — keeping you moving and getting you back to the sports or activities you love most and avoid chronic, long term pain.

My hip was in pain where I could not run like normal for exercise nor walk long distances. Dr. Matthys Airrosti and the team helped me to relieve super tight pressure points. Now, I had to do the work they assigned with home physical Therapy moves to achieve maximum results. I could see it was really working so we moved on to other areas like hamstrings, upper back, etc. Not only can I run again, but I also have more flexibility and strength to move more freely for daily living activities. Feeling great! Forever grateful!

I am so happy with Airrosti. I heard of them through work and I'm so glad to go. I've had pain in the right hip on and off for years. The pain started traveling and it got to the point where I couldn't sleep. Dr. Wu worked really hard at getting the kinks out and it gave me relief and mobility. The at-home exercises are simple to do, and if there was one I didn't like or found difficult, they offer several variations. It's nice to find pain relief without popping pain killers. It's freeing.

I’ve been dealing with a hip injury for the past three years. Sleepless nights and limited activities due to pain were my everyday experience. Over the years I visited two orthopedic doctors and received a steroid injection with no results. Dr. Amy Nguyen was extremely knowledgeable. She listened carefully to my issue and was able to isolate and manipulate pressure points to help release knots of tension and alleviate the majority of my pain in just three visits. I now have improved my range of motion and no longer dread the everyday activities many of us take for granted. I’m very grateful for her attention to detail and skills. Thank you soo much. Dr.Nguyen

I've had an ongoing issue with my piriformis for 18+ months now, which has caused a dull pain most of the time (accentuated when driving/sitting in an airline seat/sitting at my desk for long periods of time). I've tried lots of stretching and various medication to find a solution, without success. I've had five sessions with Dr. Morgan and have noticed a significant improvement. Still have some work to do as far as rehab is concerned, but this is the first time for a long time when I have felt that things are getting much better. Thanks, Heather and Courtney!!

I have now come back to Airrosti for treatment for 3 different injuries. Each time I am treated with extreme care as Dr. Hilton talked me through my injury and how we can work together to heal it. Every time I leave the office I feel better and have hope that the injury will come to an end. He's healed my back, my ankle, and now my hip. I'm a very active person, so being out for an injury is the last thing I want to do. He is flexible with scheduling and allows me to even come in twice a week while in the healing process to get worked on. I am proud to say that Airrosti has healed me and cared for me through all 3 injuries! Here's to hoping they don't have to work on me again!

I had been contemplating having my hip replaced, but felt I was too young and wanted an alternative option. Our school district offered Airrosti through our insurance, so I decided to attend a group zoom explaining what the program entailed. While on the zoom, I made sure the doctor knew my hip joint was bone on bone before deciding to move forward with the program. After the zoom, I was contacted by Dr. Anthony Pavlich about two days later. From the moment we were in contact, Dr. Pavlich showed a sense of understanding and knowledge of how to help the pain in my hip. I was assigned several stretching exercises and asked to complete them daily. Within a week, the pain in my hip went from about a 9 to about a 4.5. After our second zoom, D...+ show morer. Pavlich tweaked my stretching program to accommodate what we both felt was working and what needed to be changed. The weeks I have time to rest and stretch, my hip stays below a 5 pain threshold and there were a couple of days I was pain-free. I did have a setback when I had to work a track meet and took over 20,000 steps in one day. The pain did shoot back up to a 10, but I was diligent with the stretching routine and the pain went back down to about a 3-4. On our second to last zoom meeting, Dr. Pavlich added some strength training which I feel is going to help stabilize and strengthen the muscle around the joint. Dr. Pavlich made sure I was good with what we were doing and what we had accomplished before stopping the zoom calls. My success and anyone else's success depend on me. Dr. Pavlich gave me the tools to help prolong the hip surgery I was contemplating. I am no longer taking Motrin for the pain and do a little extra stretching when the hip pain rises above a 5. Dr. Pavlich left the line open for me and said to reach out to him if things weren't staying on course. I feel good about the program and feel with the prescribed exercises and a little weight loss, surgery can be prolonged for quite a while...

After just a few weeks of prescribed exercises and a once-a-week check-in with Dr. Danisiewicz, I am practically pain-free. I was dealing with hip pain for over a year. The pain was uncomfortable but bearable. I just figured it was part of aging. Until I was invited to an Airrosti webinar where I learned that even though my pain wasn't debilitating it was worth some attention and could be helped. The at-home recovery kit and the virtual care are top-notch and an absolute receipt for success. Thank you!

Meeting Dr. Amy was serendipity for me. Having several musculoskeletal issues and particularly right shoulder and left hip pain. I am an active person and I am a retired Physical Therapist. Dr. Amy finally gave me what I was missing in the help I had sought spanning 4 years. She sees the body as a whole and that pain is related to movement patterns. She has a 3D vision and has helped me in ways I did not think possible. I am back at the gym, gaining strength, if the pain returns I know just what to do to get back on the path because she gave me such great tools to use. In a word, Dr. Amy is awesome, so very nice, a truly great person, and professional.

I went to Dr. Seibert's office looking for care for hip pain. As an active person, it was really important for me to find a provider who would be able to diagnose and treat my pain and help me get back to feeling like myself as soon as possible. Within three visits my pain had decreased by at least 75%. My mobility was better, my ability to exercise and get back to normal is definitely within reach. What I love about Dr. Seibert is that she is attentive and always making sure I felt cared for and listen to. She was able to give me tools to help diagnose and treat my pain in the first visit. The fascial release component of the treatment has really made all the difference. I also love how she was visibly excited to help me figure out what...+ show more has been going on and get me back to normal. Thank you, Dr. Seibert!

I could not walk from a sports injury in my right hip. I was limping. I had no former injury in the right hip and caused wear and tear to it from working out. I could not walk and Dr. Unger & Alex at the Tuscan Lakes location got me back to my normal self. I have to ease into my normal workouts again, but without them, I would be in bad shape. The first hip doctor I went to told me the damage was permanent and I couldn’t ever run again - they said that my hip was shallow and that my ball & socket didn’t meet up correctly. I followed up with another hip doctor, for a second opinion, who said that I had wear and tear from working out by not stretching enough, not enough resting or yoga on rest days; And recommended that I do Airrosti a...+ show morend a cortisone shot. It turned out to be damage to my right hip from working out (not a shallow hip). The shot did not help from my second hip appointment, but Airrosti did. It took 7/8 Airrosti appointments for me to get back to being normal again without any pain. Dr. Unger & Alex gave me the tools to utilize at home to know my body better and to know exactly how to warm up and what to do post-workout. They gave me the tools to be normal again & how to get back to my old self before the injury. I am so entirely grateful for that. I was in great pain before then & months of physical therapy and doctor's appointments did nothing for me but Airrosti did. Thank you to Dr. Unger & Alex for fixing me!

The constant pain in my hip/buttocks area was getting to be more than I could handle. The telehealth visits were great, but I truly enjoyed the box that came with implements I could use at home. The videos help when I had to take my time to understand and can use them over and over again. At 56, I sometimes forgot exactly what I was supposed to do, but the videos helped. I could talk to my provider anytime, via email, and got any questions answered. Airrosti Remote Recovery is truly an ingenious idea to help in this time of Covid-19.

For at least a couple of years I've been bothered by swelling & pain to my hip and lower back after being active. Last May it worsened to a point that even several days of rest didn't seem enough to allow me to recover and be able to play sports on a regular basis. Dr Sporrer identified the correct stretching exercises that diminished and got rid of the swelling & pain. I now feel comfortable to go back and play both tennis & soccer every week! Thank you Airrosti and thankyou Dr Sporrer!

Several months ago I came to Airrosti with a hip pain that stretched to my leg a bit , the pain was more evident when going up the stairs or after getting up from a seating position. With his technique and recommended physical therapy exercises I was pain free in only 5 sessions. I highly recommend Dr. Hoang and Airrosti , at least try it is not invasive treatment so you have nothing to loose only the pain that you may have.

Thank you, Dr. Small. The muscle is working great. Your referral to Tx Ortho was well worth it. Hip replacement on 1/7/21. Thank you. Have a great New Year -- Kathy.

My right hip was catching, causing me to stop, bend over, and breathe through it. Dr. M identified the muscle group that was causing the problem and helped me to be able to move freely. I am thankful for her knowledge and skill in relieving soft tissue concerns. Thank you Dr. McGowan!

I went to Dr. Hamblen when he was doing clinicals at Parker University. A few years later when I was experiencing increasing pain in my hip, I contacted him for a recommendation to another chiropractor since I thought AIRROSTI didn't take Medicare patients. Because I was wrong, I was able to see Dr. Hamblen again. After only 3 visits I am virtually pain-free and will continue to do the exercises he and Lauren, his assistant, prescribed. Prior to his treatment, I was having pain walking and was walking stooped because of muscle contractions. I was amazed I could be pain free after less than 2 weeks. I call Dr. Hamblen my miracle worker. He and Lauren make a great team in treatment planning and patiently going over the treatment with a pat...+ show moreient. I believe I will not encounter that sort of pain again now that I know how to exercise appropriately, but rest assured I will return to Dr. Hamblen if a different problem arises. I fully recommend AIRROSTI and especially Dr. Hamblen and Lauren.

My wife and I were on a 10-day trip to Texas to see our new grandchild and our two older grandchildren and families. Two days into the trip I experienced extreme pain in hip and back that debilitated me and left me immobile. Through a friend of my daughter we were referred to Dr. Paul Unger. He saw us within 24 hours and treatment me until I left Texas. The doctor and his staff are phenomenal!! Even checks in with me to see how I am doing. Would recommend Dr. Unger to everyone!! Thank you for helping me.

My PCP referred me to Airrosti because I've had a pinching pain in my pelvis. He suspected it was a deep tissue muscle injury and Airrosti was the best treatment plan for this type of pain. After my first visit with Dr. Miranda Garcia, I received a follow up call and a thank you note from her. I shared that with my husband and said to him, "Now that's how you build a practice and that's customer service." So I will say this... I was very impressed. After my second treatment, I felt a bit better, but I also know that these types of injuries can take months to heal. As I had dealt with this terrible pain in my pelvis for months already I was willing to continue the treatment for some relief. Of course I did all the daily rehab exercises an...+ show mored followed Dr. Garcia's recommendations, so that helped too. Today was my third treatment and I cried like a baby on the table. I cried because we were finally able to get into the inflamed area that was causing pain, but I cried mostly because Dr. Garcia gave me hope. Today I finally had hope we could heal this injury together. It takes a team to win games and this Airrosti team is helping me win my "game" of a healthy and active life. Thank you

I have been dealing with hip and back pain for a year off and on. I would get better and would have a set back. Even horseback riding for 30 minutes could set me back to square one. Walking for more than a few minutes was excruciating and I used a cane. I was 90% better after my second visit and was able to walk without limit without my cane. Dr. Meyers and Katie gave me a plan to build my activity and I'm happy to say I rode 3 hours straight yesterday with no pain today. So glad I found them! Life is great again!!

What a team Cortney and Liz make!!! I am extremely pleased with the results I saw and this was all only in 3 weeks! I am an active runner and began experiencing pain in my left hip. For 5 weeks I dealt with it before finally going to Airrosti for the very first time. Believe it or not, I ran pain free the afternoon of my appointment!!!!! Cortney was able to identify the issue right away and address it with some very deep (sometimes painful) stress right where the pain was. Then Liz was able to help me with some great exercises and therapy that I can do at home daily to prevent this reoccurring. I was discharged in 3 weeks and am still not experiencing pain-and the best news is I am running my full mileage again! My only regret is I didn...+ show moret come to them when I first started feeling the pain! I can’t say enough for Cortney Kante and Liz Burgin, they have helped me get back to where I need to be, they are the best!!!!
