In this video, Airrosti’s Casey Miller, DC explains the symptoms and causes of low back pain. Learn how Airrosti’s soft tissue treatment pinpoints and treats the injury directly at the source to provide rapid relief in an average of just three visits, based on patient-reported outcomes.
The lumbar spine, or low back, is a complex structure of interconnecting bones, joints, nerves, ligaments, and muscles that supports the weight of the upper body and provides mobility for everyday motions. As well-engineered as this complex system is, the lower back is also highly susceptible to injury.
Acute Injury
The single most common cause of lower back pain is a torn or pulled muscle and/or ligament. A low back sprain or strain can happen suddenly, or can develop slowly over time from repetitive movements. Strains occur when a muscle is stretched too far and tears, damaging the muscle itself.
Common causes of sprains and strains include:
While sprains and strains do not sound serious and don’t typically cause long term issues, they can be quite painful and severely interfere with daily activities, sleep, and exercise.
Chronic Injury
Pain is considered chronic once it lasts for more than three months and exceeds the body’s natural healing process. This is often the result of a disc problem (herniated disc), a joint problem, unresolved injury from past trauma, and/or irritated spinal nerve roots.
Injury to the lower back can present with a wide variety of symptoms. Pain can be mild and merely annoying or it can be severe and debilitating. It may start suddenly, or it could start slowly—possibly coming and going—and gradually get worse over time.
Depending on the underlying cause of the pain, symptoms can be experienced in a variety of ways.
Depending on the type and severity of the pain, traditional treatment options for low back pain typically include rest and activity modification, over-the-counter or prescription pharmaceuticals, back braces, steroid injections, or even surgery. The goal of medical treatments is to reduce pain, but these treatments do not change the underlying source of pain.
To treat and effectively resolve lower back pain, a thorough diagnosis is essential. Proper lower back pain treatment reduces the likelihood of recurrent back pain flare-ups and helps prevent the development of chronic lower back pain.

I came to Airrosti looking for a solution to a lower back pain that I had been experiencing for several months. After seeing multiple professionals, Dr. Monika Patterson was the only one that didn’t make me feel like I was just another patient. Her care was outstanding in every way, she helped me heal when I thought I would have to live with back pain permanently. I also want to make note of Michelle’s kindness and professionalism when doing rehab exercises with me. Seeing them during my appointments made me feel at ease. I would highly recommend Airrosti and Dr. Patterson!

Dr. St. Dizier was a miracle worker and cured my low back pain due to a sprain within just four visits. He was attentive, kind, and efficient, allowing me to feel heard. With a short assessment, he identified the muscles and regions of my body that needed strengthening. Between manual therapy and exercises prescribed by him, my intense and unrelenting pain eased up quickly! I am so grateful to him and the Airrosti team for their help!

After several years of knee and lower back pain, Dr. Thomas has helped provide a consistent relief without medicines (most doctors I have been to just want to put me on some medicine). She works on the problem and then helps to get your body to where it isn't compensating!

I've had lower back pain for around 2 years, and after a few months with Airrosti, my pain has been significantly less to none. I would recommend Airrosti to everyone I know if they’re experiencing muscular pain or even some joint pain.

I went to Dr. Patterson after suffering from a lower back strain/spasms for almost a month. I had already tried muscle relaxers, rest, etc. with no success. Dr. Patterson was so thorough, professional, and empathetic! She scheduled four visits, but relief was obtained in just 2! Now, it’s up to me to continue my exercises given. I will not hesitate to go here FIRST for any pain or injuries!!!

I came to Airrosti with lower and mid back pain and was not sleeping due to the pain. Dr. St. Dizier was so knowledgeable and came up with a wonderful game plan on day one. We continued our sessions twice a week for 3 weeks and I am free of back pain now. He really worked with the muscle tightness and also assigned great workouts for me to do at home.
