Meet our Provider of the Month, Mike Grillo, DC. We caught up with him to learn about the oddest injury he’s ever had, his favorite sport, and the one thing he couldn’t live without.

Where is your practice?

In Short Pump, just outside of Richmond, VA, in a PartnerMD office.

Where are you originally from?

I’m from the middle of nowhere in upstate New York, a small town called Howard where there are more cows than people.

How long have you been with Airrosti?

A little over 2 years at this point.

Describe your favorite thing about your job.

My favorite part of my job is how much time I get to spend with my patients. Coming from a world where the thought process was each patient gets maybe 15 to 20 minutes per visit, it is awesome to spend a full hour per patient (half an hour if I’m not doing the rehab), this way I really get to know them better and I feel like I can help them more by being able to spend that extra time with them.

Best food recommendation near your practice’s location.

I have only been at this office for a little over a month because I moved from another area to take over this practice, so I still know too many places yet. But according to my CRS, Emily, Wong’s Tacos is the place to go.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

Depends on what time of my life we are referring to. At one point I wanted to be a lawyer and at another time I wanted to be an infectious disease specialist like Dr. Gregory House. I also wanted to be some sort of historian, and lastly, I thought about being a professional MMA fighter.

Name three things you love to do in your spare time.

Read, play video games, and work out.

What’s the oddest injury you’ve had and how did it happen?

I nearly cut off the tip of my pinky toe when I was in high school. I was out in the garage putting some cans into our recycling bin; it was a narrow space between my mom’s car and all the tools/equipment on the wall. I stubbed my toe hard on something (I was also barefoot), and when I looked back, I realized I had hit my foot on the wood splitter axe we had. When I looked down, a portion of my toe was hanging off. So, that was fun.

If you could be in any movie, what would it be and why?

I would want to be in the OG TMNT movie from the 90s. Being able to chill with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles would be awesome. Not to mention wipe the floor with the Foot Clan.

What’s a hidden skill or a fact that no one would guess about you?

I love the theater; I was in all the school plays/musicals in high school.

What’s your favorite sport?

I love football, and I’m a big fan of fantasy football, but I also love MMA, so I like UFC. I just don’t watch it as much as I used to.

If you could have any superpower, which would you choose and why?

I think I would want to have the ability to retain every piece of information I have learned in my life and be able to recall it on command, so basically have a photographic/eidetic memory. It would make diagnosing and helping patients so much easier. Not to mention I would never lose at trivia game shows.

What is your most treasured possession?

Honestly, my most treasured possessions are the memories I have from the month I spent in the Philippines. It was my first time ever leaving the country, and getting to explore and experience a whole new culture with two of my best friends was an opportunity of a lifetime. Considering one of my friends I was with was originally from there made it that much more special because I got to know more about his early life and how different it was from mine, as well as having a local show us around was a huge plus. So those memories are always nice to look back on if I’m ever feeling down.

Finally, name one thing you couldn’t live without.

I feel like I couldn’t live without my liver, seems like an important thing to have.
