What are tension headaches?

Chronic head pain can be debilitating and disruptive forces in our daily lives. From reduced focus and increased sensitivity, to missed work and social events, the harmful effects of chronic headaches can seem inescapable. Sometimes it can be a sign of a more serious condition.

Fortunately, most head pains are benign and treatable, such as the extremely common tension headache. More severe cases of tension headaches, also called stress headaches, are commonly mistaken for sinus headaches or migraines.

Types of headaches

Headaches are one of the most common causes of pain in the world that affect people from all walks of life. While light headaches are often just minor nuisances, they can sometimes develop into a severe or chronic condition that will leave you stressed and unable to focus. Knowing what type of headache you’re suffering from is the first step in finding an effective way to ease the pain.

Even though all these conditions affect the head, their causes and symptoms vary slightly and may require different treatment methods. If the head pain you’re suffering from feels like a tight band wrapped around the scalp, creating pain around the entire head and traveling down the neck, you could be suffering from a tension-type headache.

• Sinus

• Cluster

• Migraine

• Tension

What causes tension headaches?

Tension headaches occur when muscles in the scalp, neck, and shoulders contract, tightening and pulling against the skull. There are several common risk factors that could influence the severity and frequency of tension headaches.

• Alcohol consumption

• Poor posture

• Smoking

• Eye strain

• Dental problems such as jaw clenching

• Stress and fatigue

Symptoms of a tension headache

Tension headaches typically get divided into two main categories — episodic and chronic. Tension headaches typically last from 30 minutes to a week, while chronic headaches can appear 15 times a month or more and last up to several months.

• Dull head pain

• Tight, band-like pressure around the skull

• Sensitivity in the shoulders, head, and neck

• Pain is worse in the scalp, temples, and back of the neck

• Difficulty sleeping

• Difficulty focusing

• Irritability

Tension Headache FAQS

Surgery is not necessary for treating tension headaches. Most cases are effectively managed with non-invasive treatments such as medications, lifestyle changes, stress management, Airrosti care, and physical therapy. In rare and extreme cases, if headaches are linked to structural issues, surgery might be considered. However, tension headaches typically respond well to conservative treatments without the need for surgery.

Yes, it’s safe to take medications for tension headache pain, but it’s important to follow your healthcare provider’s advice. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen, acetaminophen, or aspirin can help relieve tension headaches. In cases of chronic tension headaches, a doctor may recommend prescription medications such as muscle relaxants or antidepressants. Be careful not to overuse pain relievers, as this can lead to rebound headaches.

Yes, self-care techniques and exercises can help reduce the frequency and intensity of tension headaches. Relaxation techniques like deep breathing, meditation, and progressive muscle relaxation can ease stress. Gentle stretching exercises for the neck, shoulders, and upper back can reduce muscle tension. Maintaining good posture and using ergonomic setups at work can also help prevent tension headaches.

It is generally not necessary to limit daily activity when experiencing tension headaches, but reducing stress-inducing activities or anything that worsens the headache can help. Physical activity such as regular aerobic exercise can help prevent tension headaches over time, though intense exercise during a headache may not be advisable. If certain activities trigger your headaches, it may be helpful to modify them and consult a healthcare provider to develop a suitable plan for managing triggers.
