With the year winding down, and a new one upon us, this time of year is often one of reflection. When looking back at the year, you may find that you didn’t accomplish as much as you wanted or developed a few bad habits. This is the perfect time to plan for healthy New Year’s resolution goals! Here are five tips for keeping your New Year’s resolutions!

1. Set SMART Goals

No matter what your vision of the future entails, it’s always important to have an action plan. This is where SMART goals come in. SMART goals are meant to improve your chances of success, and can be broken down into the following:

  • Specific: Your resolution should be clear and specific so you can feel motivated to achieve it. What do you want to accomplish? How many times a week do you need to practice?
  • Measurable: Convert your resolution into a measurable amount to easily track your progress over time. What can you use to track your progress?
  • Attainable: Whether you’re hoping to travel the world, lose weight, or learn a new language, make sure you have the skills and tools needed to achieve your goals. Your goal should be challenging, but possible.
  • Relevant: Prioritize your most relevant goals. Does this resolution fit within your broader vision? Can this be traced back to your passion or personal objectives?
  • Time-bound: Give yourself a reasonable deadline to work with, as this will help with prioritization and motivation. How long should it take for you to accomplish your goal?

By writing down SMART goals, you’re committing to your vision and consciously thinking about what you want to achieve during the new year. As a bonus, if you write out your plan, you can check each milestone once completed to help visualize your progress!

2. Get a Workout Buddy

Exercising with a friend or family member can be an effective motivator. Not only will a workout buddy add some support, but they can also offer tips on form or help spot you. Another benefit of having a workout partner is that they can provide some accountability since you’ll both be pushing yourselves and working on your goals. It’s also more fun and less intimidating to hit up the gym or fitness studio with a friendly face by your side.

3. Track Your Fitness Goals & Progress

Focusing solely on your goals can become discouraging after a while, especially if you’ve hit a plateau or haven’t made as much progress as you expected. One way to avoid ruminating on these challenges is to record the progress you’ve made so far.

A journal is a great tool that can help you stay organized and see your progress over time. Many journals also contain habit trackers, writing prompts, and tips on how to stay motivated and achieve your goals. If you are more of a digital person, you can easily track your fitness progress in an app! As previously mentioned, visually seeing how your journey is progressing is a great benefit, as it can help you plan more efficiently and be a nice confidence booster!

4. Try New Activities

Don’t overthink it! An exercise routine doesn’t have to be complicated to be effective. If there are exercises you can’t or don’t like to do, modify them or replace them with something more compatible with you. If you’re struggling to find time to work out in the morning, try an evening or midday workout instead.

Additionally, find activities that you love and switch things up occasionally to help keep things fresh and avoid hitting a plateau! Instead of going to the gym, you can try an outdoor workout. Or, perhaps you have always wanted to try hot yoga or boxing; now is the time! Switching up your exercise routines is a great way to reinvigorate your passion and motivation.

5. Celebrate Your Milestones

Remember to acknowledge the milestones you’ve reached and the challenges you’ve overcome. Celebrating these little victories can also give your motivation a little boost on days you may otherwise feel like giving up.

When you accomplish a goal you had set, try rewarding yourself with something that aligns with your fitness goals, such as new running shoes or a massage to help alleviate muscle tension and relax for a bit!

One last way to celebrate your milestones is by sharing them on social media. Keeping your friends and followers updated on your progress and achievements can lead to positive feedback and support. Additionally, you might inspire others to start picking some activities!
