Upper back pain can have several causes, and therefore, present itself differently case by case. Common causes include:
Often due to repetitive movements or overexertion of the muscles and is commonly seen in athletes.
Direct impacts from accidents or falls can damage the spine, bones, muscles, or ligaments in your back, potentially causing upper left back pain or upper right back pain.
Conditions like osteoarthritis or degenerative disc disease can gradually wear down spinal discs and joints, leading to pain or discomfort.
Slouching or hunching, common among desk workers and those with sedentary lifestyles, can strain the upper back. Moreover, standing with poor posture for extended periods can worsen these issues, and may lead to back pain when standing.
This condition occurs when the spaces within your spine narrow, putting pressure on the nerves that travel through the spine. It can result in pain, numbness, or muscle weakness in the upper back and extremities.
Other causes of upper back pain include Upper Cross Syndrome, a muscle imbalance leading to pain and muscle weakness, and scoliosis, an abnormal spinal curvature that can cause discomfort.
Symptoms of upper back pain depend on the type of injury or condition you may be experiencing.
Common symptoms of upper back pain include:
• Aching or throbbing pain
• Sharp or stabbing sensations
• Muscle tightness and tension
• Tingling or numbness that extends from your upper back to your shoulders and arms
• Pain that radiates down your back, possibly indicating a pinched nerve
Not unsimilar from upper back pain, middle back pain shares many common symptoms, including:
• Tightness or stiffness in the joints or muscles
• Muscle aches
• Sharp, aching pain
Pain in the middle of your back may share similar causes to upper or lower back pain, such as a muscle strain or sprain from poor form when working out or lifting objects, a direct injury from a fall or accident possibly, or a herniated disc. Other causes or factors can be poor posture, osteoarthritis, or aging.
You should always consult with a healthcare professional to determine the cause of back pain, regardless of its location.
Surgery is not always necessary for mid back pain. In many cases, conservative treatments such as rest, physical therapy, Airrosti care, medication, and lifestyle modifications can effectively manage symptoms and improve mid back function. Surgery may be considered if conservative treatments fail to provide relief, or if there is evidence of structural issues such as spinal instability or compression of nerves that require surgical intervention. It’s important to discuss all treatment options with a healthcare professional to determine the best course of action.
It’s generally safe to take medications for mid back pain, but it’s important to use them as directed by your healthcare provider. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can help reduce inflammation and alleviate discomfort. Prescription medications such as muscle relaxants or corticosteroids may be recommended for more severe cases of mid back pain. It’s important to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new medication regimen, especially if you have underlying health conditions or are taking other medications.
Yes, there are several self-care techniques and exercises that can help alleviate mid back pain. These may include gentle stretching exercises to improve flexibility, strengthening exercises to support the spine and core muscles, and postural correction techniques to maintain proper alignment of the spine. Additionally, applying heat or ice to the affected area, using ergonomic furniture and workspace setups, and practicing stress-reduction techniques such as deep breathing or meditation can help alleviate muscle tension and discomfort.
While it’s important to avoid activities that exacerbate mid back pain, completely restricting all activity may not be necessary. Modifying activities to reduce strain on the mid back and incorporating rest breaks can help alleviate symptoms. Low-impact exercises such as walking, swimming, or yoga can be beneficial for maintaining mobility and promoting healing without putting excessive strain on the mid back. However, if mid back pain persists or worsens with activity, it’s important to consult with a healthcare professional for proper evaluation and guidance on activity modification.
I have tried two other chiropractors in the last 4 months, and at least 20 visits. Dr. Bodziony has done a miracle in just a few visits. I have no more pain in my back, neck, or shoulders. I can tie my shoes and get up off the floor without grabbing on to anything. He's absolutely the best!

I was referred to Airrosti for upper back pain from being a full-time nanny and college student. After a few visits, my pain was completely fixed; now, I have many a bunch of tools going forward on how to prevent my pain from coming back. Airrosti was a great experience for me!

Over the last several years, I have injured my back. Dr. Siragusa has always been able to speed my healing and get me on the road to recovery ASAP. He has also shown me how to keep my injury away. I have also seen him for help with my elbows and one of my shoulders.

I have been to Airrosti in the past for a previous injury. So, when I hurt my back again, I knew I needed the Airrosti team again. I limped in last week because I was in so much pain. I couldn’t stand for long because the shooting pains went down my legs. I couldn’t bend and I could barely twist my waist. In one session, I was 85% better! After my first session I was able to stand and sit with minimal pain. Although I still couldn’t bend completely, within a few days, the pain was almost entirely gone. I had one last session just to get the last kinks out of my back, and now I feel great! I’m so thankful for Drew and Julie who helped me. They are very kind and the results speak for themselves! I can’t recommend this place enoug...+ show moreh.

I came to see Dr. Hoyt with low back and hip issues from long hours sitting for my job and lack of exercise. Walking was more of a shuffle and extremely painful. I was diagnosed 10 year ago with arthritis in my knee. Dr. Hoyt discovered very quickly that my back and hip issues were the result of compensating for my knee. He worked on me and had some exercises for me to do between appointments. He also had an MRI done which showed deterioration in my knee and referred me to an Osteopathic Surgeon. I will eventually need the knee replaced but I am so thankful to be active and comfortably mobile again. After just a few weeks I am back to walking normally and controlling the back pain on my own using the exercises I was taught.

I visited Airrosti for neck and back pain that has been persistently bothering me for many years. Dr Bonk took a lot of time to find the exact points of my pain and helped me to understand the best ways to help not only alleviate this pain but to help prevent future chronic episodes. After one visit the pain was noticeably decrease by half. After my third visit the pain was all but gone. Each appointment with Dr. Bonk, followed by 20 to 30 minutes with Amanda who gave great instruction on how to remedy any reoccurring pain and simple at home exercises that strengthen the troubled areas to help prevent or lessen the reoccurring issue. Great people, very affordable and highly recommend for immediate pain relief and realistic at home exerci...+ show moreses for any age group or body type.

I came in with chronic back pain, constantly bandaiding the pain with small fixes but never fixing it. Picking up kids or lifting weights always reset the pain. Dr. St. Dizier helped me understand how our muscles connect and what types of exercises will stretch and strengthen the right things. I always felt like I was in good hands, with the right level of explanation, and support. Highly recommend you book time with him.

I have been dealing with back pain for some time. I went to PT at Concentra, but they didn't help much at all honestly. coming here was a completely different experience. Brittany paid specific attention to the pain I'm feeling, and the combination of chiropractic care and physical therapy was done very well. the exercises actually help me feel less constant pain and has improved the overall pain I feel. I feel there was care in treatment, all team members especially Brittany, were very kind and treated me well. my overall experience has been very good here and I am grateful for coming here and choosing airrosti for treatment.

I have suffered back and neck pain most of my life and as I have gotten older, the pain has gotten more frequent and intense. I have had many treatments in the past from Chiropractic to massage therapy etc. All short-term relief and the problem persists. I heard about Airrosti from a co-worker who could not say enough about their practice. After my first visit, my pain level decreased by at least half. By visit three, it was barely noticeable. The office personnel, Dr. Bonk and Amanda treat you like a person. They explain what they are doing, what activities that can be causing the pain, and how to avoid them. They communicate very effectively with routines and exercises that can not only help reduce the pain but help to keep it from com...+ show moreing back by making those areas stronger.

Jade is such a sweet soul. After my first visit with her, my upper back pain level moved from worst to good and I was out of medication. By the time I went for my second visit, I’m already without pain. The pain wakes me up at night but after my first visit with her, not anymore. She’s so nice and friendly. Thanks for all you did for me. Will highly recommend you!

I was referred by my primary care physician for neck and back pain. Dr. Abilez left no stone unturned. She was not able to help elevate my neck pain due to I needed surgery. However, after two visits for my back pain, I was pain free. She referred me to an amazing surgeon for my neck issues. I WOULD highly recommend anyone to visit Dr. Abilez and Kasey before opting for surgery. They do fix pain fast and go above and beyond to help you and it shows they really care about their patients.

I had back pain about two weeks ago. I visited Dr. Kuykendall and Ms. Nicole Swank. They were very kind and explained in detail. The treatment and exercise instructions were very precise. I stopped having pain in one week and work normally now. It is much faster than 8 years ago. I strongly recommend my family and friends to see them in case of a similar problem.

Was at my wits end trying to get relief in any way possible for back pain. I had been to 3 different ERs with no luck or any answers as to the cause. After I explained the situation to Dr. Bodziony she took the time to explain how we got to where we were and how to fix it. She took the time to explain everything about my treatment and how I should feel post-treatment. Where has this been all my life? Prior to treatment, my pain level was a 7 of 10. After treatment, maybe a 2 at worst. No drugs, no cutting, and no recovery time! I recommend this process of treatment to anyone undecided or on the fence. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain! Thank you Dr Bodziony for your time and effort!

I have had back pain for a long time. When it flares up sometimes rest will resolve it but not this time. Then I went to Airrosti and saw improvement after one week, and restored to better than baseline after two weeks, and no pain by my third visit. I followed the at-home routine diligently which was very helpful and progressive so that I could see improvement almost daily.

Before my first appointment at Airrosti, I pretty much couldn’t move, bend, or reach out in any direction. Sitting or resting for about 10 minutes or less was enough for me to be in extreme pain and/or become stiff. Dr. Garza asked thorough questions to pinpoint where exactly the pain was coming from and set me up for an in-office and at-home recovery plan. As soon as I walked out of that first appointment, my pain had decreased and my mobile has increased. After three more visits and doing my part at home, I can honestly testify my pain is minimal! My injury was pretty severe, so I still have some work to do on my own with the exercises given, but I have no doubt soon I will be pain free thanks to Dr. Garza at Airrosti.

Seeing Doctor Ritola was the best decision ever, you see l am a retired Physical Therapist with 53 years of experience ( worked until l was 86 years, taking care of my business)l treated my neck and back problems with modalities with little results. When advised by a friend to see a chiropractic doctor l told her that manipulation and adjustments would increase pain, inflammation, and muscles spasm in the area. What l needed was a technique that releases the muscles fascia. I decided to place a call to Airrosti and l was fortunate to Dc Ritola which resolved my problems in just 3 sessions together with Pete's excellent exercise program. It was my responsibility to continue with exercises to completely restore a functional back.

After over 7 years of chronic lower back and hip pain, I thought there was nothing that would solve my problem. I had been to countless chiropractors and specialists who were only able to temporality reduce my pain. Now after treatment, I remember what it feels like to be human again. I have a newfound energy that I’m excited to restart my normal life again!

After I was told I needed my 3rd C-Spine fusion, I went for a second opinion and this doctor suggested physical therapy first. One of my co-workers suggested I go see Dr.McCalister, so I did. After a couple of weeks under Dr. McCalister's care my neck, shoulder, and arm pain was gone and now I'm able to prolong my surgery a bit longer. After working out my neck issues he also then worked on my lower back issues. With Dr. McCalister and the staff that shows me how to do the exercises I need I have been able to get the relief I haven't had in quite some time.

I came in with a back injury I sustained in a soccer game. Dr Raabe had me feeling much better after just 3 visits!

Dr. Jones helped both me and my wife with very different issues. My wife had back issues for a while, mostly due to working a pretty physically demanding job and not getting enough rest. We tried a traditional chiropractor and ended up in the ER after one "decompression" session. We were scared to try any other chiro so went to a primary care doctor for advice and she was prescribed traditional physical therapy. During this, I got a frozen shoulder and a friend of mine recommended Airrosti. Dr. Jones was the closest place so I went. He and his staff fixed my shoulder in two visits. Meanwhile, my wife had been doing PT for almost 2 months with no real change in her back pain. I told her to go see Dr. Jones too and he fixed her back issues...+ show more in about 4 or 5 visits. I now tell anyone with muscle pain, back pain, or neck pain issues to go to their nearest Airrosti immediately and thank me later. Dr. Jones and Airrosti's mission as a whole will always have my support and will be the first I call for anything that comes up in the future. Thank you!

My long term back problems had gotten progressively worse over the last few years. I'm one of those people who has had bone scans, MRI(4), injections, medicine, physical therapy etc. On a recommendation from a family member, I tried Airrosti. Just a few visits with Dr. Wu and I have learned what to do to not only prevent the escalation of the pain but to stop it from hurting in the first place. I highly recommend this to anyone with back pain.

I slipped in the shower. As a 60-year-old with psoriatic arthritis, I knew my back was not young anymore but a few days later, I was in the ER in agonizing pain. The initial diagnosis was a herniated disc. An MRI showed it to be not quite that severe but it was still debilitatingly painful. I learned that I had compressive disc disease, 3 bulging discs, spondylitis, arthritis, and stenosis. A week later when I was referred to see Dr. Wu at Airrosti, I could barely walk and the pain was still debilitating. Over the next 3 weeks, each visit yielded significant pain reduction. By the 3rd visit (a week and a half) I could walk normally, sleep on both sides, get groceries (although it was at the limit at the time), and my pain was much less e...+ show moreven without meds. It has been 5 weeks since my injury. I am back to working almost full days. I can walk normally, cook, and do light chores. I am doing the mild exercises and stretches that Dr. Wu and his staff Craig taught me and I can feel the difference each time I do them. I can see light at the end of the tunnel and hope that I will be back to fishing and mowing soon. I am still amazed at the difference that Dr. Wu made.

I was experiencing lower back and hip pain, it hurt to walk, lay, or sit too long. Dr. St. Dizier helped my body get pain free. If you are willing to follow the plan, you will be pain free like me.

I am so grateful I found Airrosti. I have suffered with back issues since a child, even wearing a full back brace, throughout 5th and 6th grades. I found Airrosti about 8 years ago, and have loved the outcomes. Most all my treatments are completed in two visits. No pills, no surgery's, excellent outcome.

I have suffered from chronic, debilitating back pain for years. My activities had become very limited and it was taking its toll on my overall health and well being. A friend suggested that in addition to the other treatments I was receiving, I might want to see Dr. Patterson. At that point - I figured why not..what do I have to lose. After a short time with her I was back to riding my horse, going to the gym and even hiking (with a full backpack)! She checks in on me regularly and I can go in for "tune-ups" when necessary. She has taught me how to manage my back issues so that they do not completely disrupt my life. It really was life changing.
