Leg pain often appears when overuse or trauma affects one of the lower body’s muscles, ligaments, tendons, or other soft tissues. These injuries occur frequently during activities involving heavy, repeated leg use, like running, jumping, or kicking, or due to sudden impact or changes in direction or speed.
Even individuals who aren’t active can also struggle with leg problems. Muscles weakened from lack of use and possible nerve issues can all become risk factors for painful leg conditions.
When it comes to soft tissue leg injuries, pain is often experienced in one of the many leg muscles and joints. The quads, hamstrings, and IT band may be affected in the upper leg. In the lower legs, common areas of injury are the knees, shins, and calves, down to the ankles and feet.
Symptoms can vary widely depending on the type and location of the injury. The most common symptoms of a leg injury involve restricted movement and increased pain during activity.
• Dull, aching pain in the legs that worsens with movement
• Stiffness or reduced mobility
• Muscle cramps or spasms
• Pain that radiates up or down the leg
• Difficulty putting weight on the affected leg
• Swelling, bruising, or redness in the affected leg
Leg pain can sometimes be referred, meaning that the source of pain comes from another part of the body, such as the lower back or hips. This type of leg pain often radiates down the length of the leg and may be accompanied by symptoms like numbness or tingling. An example would be sciatic pain, where a condition or injury in the lower back or glutes can cause pain in the back of the legs.
Surgery is not typically necessary for leg pain. It depends on the underlying cause of the pain. Most cases, such as those caused by muscle strain, sciatica, or poor circulation, can be treated with physical therapy, Airrosti care, medications, and lifestyle modifications. Surgery may be considered if leg pain is due to a serious underlying issue, such as nerve compression or vascular problems, and conservative treatments are unsuccessful.
Yes, over-the-counter medications like NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen) or acetaminophen can help manage leg pain, particularly if it’s caused by muscle strain or inflammation. If the pain persists or is severe, consult a healthcare provider for further recommendations, including prescription medications. Always follow your healthcare provider’s guidance on medication use.
Yes, self-care and exercises can help relieve leg pain. Rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) can be effective initially if the pain is from a strain or injury. Gentle stretching, foam rolling, and strengthening exercises can help alleviate pain caused by muscle tightness or weakness. Low-impact exercises like walking, swimming, or cycling can also help keep the legs active.
Yes, you should limit activities that worsen your leg pain, such as prolonged standing, running, or heavy lifting. Resting and modifying activities is crucial, but staying active with gentle, low-impact movements can help maintain circulation and mobility. Gradually resuming activities, under the guidance of a healthcare provider, can help avoid re-injury and support recovery.
I was confused about whether I needed treatment with Airrosti or to go to my orthopedic doctor. I scheduled a Zoom consultation appointment, and after answering my questions, the doctor believed my problem to be soft tissue pain, so I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Latoia McGowan. I would encourage anyone unsure to do this further investigation and Zoom consultation. I was limping and had pain in my left leg and hip area. The first visit was painful enough that I skipped one week. When I returned, Dr. McGowan reminded me that it might get worse before it gets better. It did, but not for long. I took it slow and easy. She also told me that everyone's fast (We Fix Pain Fast) is different. During this time, my husband had a health injury...+ show more that caused both of us trauma. Dr. McGowan was such a good listener. She kept me grounded and on track. Every week, I was getting better; I had less pain, less limping, and more ability to lift my left leg to get into the car. I was happy with Dr. McGowan's techniques, exercises, and encouragement. I was also happy that Airrosti had specific goals and not to just keep getting treatment. I am a very grateful patient.
