Sciatica is a symptom of an underlying medical condition—it is not a medical diagnosis in and of itself. The term sciatica describes the symptom of nerve pain that radiates down the leg.
•Tingling, numbness or weakness
•Pain that originates in the lower back
•Pain that travels through the buttock and down the large sciatic nerve in the back of the leg
The sciatic nerve is the largest and longest nerve in the body—running from the lower back, through the buttock, and splitting to run down the back of the legs. It is responsible for controlling muscle movement in the thigh and other parts of the leg as well. An condition that causes inflammation or irritation to the sciatic nerve can result in pain to the area.
Common conditions resulting in sciatic pain include a herniated disc, lumbar spinal stenosis, piriformis syndrome, or an injury to the lower back that puts pressure on the sciatic nerve.
Sciatica is the name given to pain caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve. Anything that irritates the sciatic nerve can cause pain, ranging from mild to severe. Sciatica is usually caused by a compressed or pinched nerve in the lower spine.
Common causes of sciatica can include a herniated disk and a narrowing of the spine canal (called spinal stenosis). Everyday movement and injury also contribute to conditions that are the underlying causes of sciatica.
Episodes of sciatic pain tend to occur when excess pressure is placed on tight or imbalanced piriformis or hamstring muscles.
•Sleeping in an awkward position
•Sleeping on a mattress that is too soft
•Wearing high-heeled shoes
•Gaining weight
•Engaging in a new physical activity
Surgery is not usually necessary for sciatica. Most cases improve with conservative treatments such as rest, physical therapy, Airrosti care, medications, and lifestyle adjustments. Surgery may be considered in severe cases where sciatica is caused by a herniated disc or spinal stenosis and when non-surgical treatments fail to provide relief after several months. It may also be required if there is significant nerve damage or loss of function in the legs.
Yes, over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen, naproxen, or acetaminophen can help reduce inflammation and relieve sciatica pain. In more severe cases, prescription medications such as muscle relaxants or nerve pain medications (like gabapentin) may be recommended by a doctor. In some cases, corticosteroid injections may be used for more immediate relief. Always follow your healthcare provider’s guidance regarding medication use.
Yes, self-care techniques and exercises are important for managing sciatica. Resting and applying heat or ice to the affected area can help relieve pain and inflammation. Stretching and strengthening exercises targeting the lower back and hips can relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve. Exercises like pelvic tilts, seated piriformis stretches, and knee-to-chest stretches can be particularly helpful. An Airrosti Provider can guide you through a safe and effective exercise routine to alleviate pain and prevent recurrence.
Yes, it’s important to limit activities that worsen sciatica, especially movements that strain the lower back, such as heavy lifting or prolonged sitting. While rest is important initially, staying active with low-impact activities like walking or swimming can help improve recovery. Gradually resuming normal activities with proper posture and body mechanics is important to avoid re-injury. An Airrosti can guide you on which activities to avoid and how to safely return to normal function.
For a long time I’ve had discomfort in my lower back specially on the right side, I’ve had chiropractic treatment done but nothing was as great as Airrosti. They were very kind at this location and informative. I will say while this was one of the most painful treatments I have ever received, dealing with those few minutes of pain for a body that will feel great for a long time is very much worth it! I have never felt better and I went from a 10 on the pain scale to 0 in 4 visits. Airrosti was a recommendation from my mother, now I’ll be the one recommending it to everyone I know!

After watching Bill Kempe treat two of our teenage daughters, I found myself making a new patient appointment amidst the coronavirus lockdown because of excruciating sciatica pain. Previously, Bill was fantastic with our daughter who had a volleyball related injury. I watched as he walked her through a series of exercises and was able to show us exactly where the weakness was in her muscles that had shifted use to other muscles, created the pain and limited chest expansion which limited her ability to take deep breaths. Bill uses a dry marker and a great anatomy illustration on the wall to show us the muscles impacted, the muscles he wanted her to strengthen and how they were connected. We both came away understanding exactly what was re...+ show morequired and why. His colleague Erin walked my daughter thru the exercises he recommended, and the app they provide with images of each exercise, the directions AND a video. A really great technology delivery right to your phone. Yesterday, Bill was able to identify the source of my discomfort after walking me thru a range of motion exercises and explained it on the full body chart and additional white board drawings. He showed how the pain was generating from my disc and how the treatment would effect it. Bill worked on my back by applying a great deal of pressure which was painful at the time, but it is clear today the treatment has already made a significant reduction in my levels of pain. I then received my exercise regime from Erin and practiced all of them with her and received the link to follow along. I cannot say enough about this team's professionalism, expertise, clarity and compassion. After weeks of pain, I safely entered their office with my mask after curbside check-in, and walked out with pain reduction and an easy to follow path to recovery. Run (if you can) to avail yourself of Bill's experience and clear and direct explanations of your pain and the exercises and treatment to help. And, he always calls to follow-up and answer any questions.

I wanted to train for a half marathon, but have been dealing with nagging gluteal muscle tension and piriformis pain that prevented me from working out. After seeing a chiropractor without relief, the doctor recommended trying Airrosti, (since I was sure it was a muscle problem rather than skeletal). Dr Abilez explained what my problem was along with the treatment plan and why it works. After two sessions I could tell that the tension was released and I was able to work out again. The stretches and rehab exercises in conjunction with the treatment worked great to get me back into training for my run. I felt that the staff genuinely cared about me and provided an individualized plan of care and invited my follow up questions. This is well...+ show more worth the money as it is a real solution to the problem without frequent return visits.

I had sciatic issues off and on for years, then developed constant pain near my tailbone related to sitting at a computer all day. I tried MANY cushions with no improvement. When I went to Airrosti and Dr. Vick said she could probably have me close to pain-free in 4-5 weeks, I was excited but a little skeptical. She did myofascial release and Cera taught me stretches and exercises. After seeing them once a week for 5 weeks I was completely pain-free! It’s now been several weeks and I am still pain-free. The best part is that I have exercises I can do to keep the pain from coming back. I would tell anyone to forget the cushions and fix the pain for good!

I had really bad pain from my lower back, and running down my leg, I was referred to Airrosti by my father's friend. When I booked my first appointment, I didn’t know what to expect. After my first appointment, I immediately started to feel a difference in my pain, as I was able to participate in more activities. A few more visits, Mr. Siragusa, and his partner helped me increase my muscle strength, and soon enough, I had no more pain! I’m able to do the things I love now and more efficiently. I thank both of them for their time, and if I ever have the same issue in the future, I know who to turn to! Thank you!

When I stumbled upon Airrosti I was certain I was destined to live with chronic lower back pain and sciatica. Dr. Anatolia Vick was amazing and the Airrostic model of care works. Dr. Vick is a great communicator, and she and Cera Southerland are a great team when coordinating your care and follow up. The Airrosti model works only if you are willing to commit to the prescribed program. The program is hard work, but it yields results. I would recommend Airrosti to anyone that might need a non-invasive, drug free approach to pain relief. I would also recommend Dr. Vick; she's a consummate professional.

Went in to see Dr. Myles with what I thought was a sciatic nerve issue. I was at a point that I couldn't walk far without doubling over or stopping to stretch. No relief after the first visit, but I think I wasn't able to tell her exactly where the pain was. Then 50% better after the 2nd visit. Then 100% better a day after 3rd. The key is to do your home stretches and ice it if recommended. I would definitely recommend Dr. Myles.

I came to Airrosti with a sciatica issue. The pain started in my lower back and radiated down my leg. Dr. Bertrand was very friendly and informative and I met with him several times. While the treatment he provided, as well as the exercises suggested by JD, were helpful for a limited time we found they were not resolving my issue. Dr. Bertrand then suggested an MRI which showed a severely herniated disc. I was referred to a neurosurgeon and have since had a minimally invasive microdiscectomy which provided instant relief from my pain. I appreciate the respect, concern, and guidance the team at Airrosti provided. I also appreciate that they do not continue to treat you if the treatment is not working. I would definitely recommend the team...+ show more at Airrosti.
