Sciatica is a symptom of an underlying medical condition—it is not a medical diagnosis in and of itself. The term sciatica describes the symptom of nerve pain that radiates down the leg.
•Tingling, numbness or weakness
•Pain that originates in the lower back
•Pain that travels through the buttock and down the large sciatic nerve in the back of the leg
The sciatic nerve is the largest and longest nerve in the body—running from the lower back, through the buttock, and splitting to run down the back of the legs. It is responsible for controlling muscle movement in the thigh and other parts of the leg as well. An condition that causes inflammation or irritation to the sciatic nerve can result in pain to the area.
Common conditions resulting in sciatic pain include a herniated disc, lumbar spinal stenosis, piriformis syndrome, or an injury to the lower back that puts pressure on the sciatic nerve.
Sciatica is the name given to pain caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve. Anything that irritates the sciatic nerve can cause pain, ranging from mild to severe. Sciatica is usually caused by a compressed or pinched nerve in the lower spine.
Common causes of sciatica can include a herniated disk and a narrowing of the spine canal (called spinal stenosis). Everyday movement and injury also contribute to conditions that are the underlying causes of sciatica.
Episodes of sciatic pain tend to occur when excess pressure is placed on tight or imbalanced piriformis or hamstring muscles.
•Sleeping in an awkward position
•Sleeping on a mattress that is too soft
•Wearing high-heeled shoes
•Gaining weight
•Engaging in a new physical activity
Surgery is not usually necessary for sciatica. Most cases improve with conservative treatments such as rest, physical therapy, Airrosti care, medications, and lifestyle adjustments. Surgery may be considered in severe cases where sciatica is caused by a herniated disc or spinal stenosis and when non-surgical treatments fail to provide relief after several months. It may also be required if there is significant nerve damage or loss of function in the legs.
Yes, over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen, naproxen, or acetaminophen can help reduce inflammation and relieve sciatica pain. In more severe cases, prescription medications such as muscle relaxants or nerve pain medications (like gabapentin) may be recommended by a doctor. In some cases, corticosteroid injections may be used for more immediate relief. Always follow your healthcare provider’s guidance regarding medication use.
Yes, self-care techniques and exercises are important for managing sciatica. Resting and applying heat or ice to the affected area can help relieve pain and inflammation. Stretching and strengthening exercises targeting the lower back and hips can relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve. Exercises like pelvic tilts, seated piriformis stretches, and knee-to-chest stretches can be particularly helpful. An Airrosti Provider can guide you through a safe and effective exercise routine to alleviate pain and prevent recurrence.
Yes, it’s important to limit activities that worsen sciatica, especially movements that strain the lower back, such as heavy lifting or prolonged sitting. While rest is important initially, staying active with low-impact activities like walking or swimming can help improve recovery. Gradually resuming normal activities with proper posture and body mechanics is important to avoid re-injury. An Airrosti can guide you on which activities to avoid and how to safely return to normal function.

I went to see Dr. Peregrine for sciatica nerve pain. I am very pleased with the results of my Airrosti treatment. Dr. Peregrine's treatments along with stretching and exercise techniques taught me by Ryan Brown relieved my pain after just 3 visits. I would highly recommend them.

I have seen Dr. Reeves several times, twice in 2016 for a lower back ailment and just recently for a sciatic nerve problem in my left hip. First, Dr. Reed performed a number of tests to diagnose the problem. Once diagnosed with the sciatic nerve issue, Dr. Reed worked his magic pressure and relieved the pain. Dr. Reed has a great caring doctor's manner and such a delightful personality. Dr. Reed demonstrated several therapy exercises which I performed before I left. He also provided a booklet demonstrating the exercises and sent me an email video of the exercises. I highly recommend Dr. Reed for any pain management health issues. Thank you.

As a flight attendant at Southwest, my job is very physical. After back surgery, I developed piriformis syndrome (the piriformis spasms around the sciatic nerve). I was in pain 24/7. My neurosurgeon recommended Airrosti. I limped into Dr. Bertrand's Airrosti office and walked out! Dr. Bertrand told me I would need 7 appts. After 5 appts I was feeling great, so he released me. He didn't talk me into more appts than I needed. Now when It flares up I control it with the physical therapy they taught me. Occasionally I can't control it and 1-2 visits and I back to normal. Best of all no drugs! Thank you, Dr. Bertrand!

I began having major issues with my sciatic nerve in May. After 2 ER visits, MRI's, pain meds and conventional rehab, I wasn't happy with the slow process of feeling better and getting back to normal. I decided to try Airrosti and Dr Kregel went though all of my history and explained where the issue was and how he would go about helping to correct my issues. After 4 treatments I can say that I feel almost 100% better! I would recommend him to anyone! Please try Airrosti before going through surgery! Thanks again, Dr. Kregel!!

I met Dr. Balza and his staff at Cincinnati Children's Hospital during a foam roller seminar. I was intrigued with the seminar and his statement about resolving most soft pain injuries in three sessions and hoped he could help me. I had three major problems that I needed Dr. Balza to resolve. I had sciatica, passive tension in my left shoulder and pain running down the side of my left foot. He was definitely a man of his word and all three areas are now pain free (I was so sorry I hadn't met him sooner). For the first time in 21 years, I no longer have pain and I consider that a miracle. I am making sure that I continue to do home therapy with my foam roller and my new best friend a lacrosse ball. Thank you Dr. Balza for giving me my joy...+ show more back

I was referred to Dr. Ramon by a friend because of my sciatica on my left side. I was quite impressed with Dr. Ramon. He called me before my appointment to check on me. I went for my first visit and was extremely impressed with how caring he is. He performed therapy on me and I have to say, I felt so much better when I left the office. The pain was still there but was tolerable. After the second visit, I was SOOOOOO much better. I continued to do the exercises they were having me do and after about 2 weeks the pain was gone. Thank you Dr. Ramon! You are a God send!! God Bless you!!

I was in such excruciating sciatic-like pain. Sitting at a desk all day was so painful that I was seriously contemplating retirement. I could not walk, sit, stand or drive without pain! I was afraid I would end up in a wheelchair. I had tried everything from chiropractor, physical therapy, traction, and massage and just could not get relief. Desperate for a solution, I decided to see a back specialist. After an MRI, and getting a second opinion, both surgeons stated that surgery was the only solution. I scheduled back surgery with both surgeons and eventually cancelled both. After my very first treatment with Dr. Kulcak I was ecstatic! I could not believe 90% of the pain was gone! I could sit, stand and sleep after almost 3-months of suf...+ show morefering. After my second treatment it was absolutely pure joy! I was the 30th patient she had prevented from having surgery. I have recommended anyone who has pain to call Airrosti and make an appointment. I was assigned various exercises which I keep up with religiously. I am now pain FREE. I can't express my thanks enough to Dr. Kulcak for giving me back my very active life -- and my husband is so happy to have his wife back. I would highly recommend Airrosti to anyone with pain. Thank you so much Dr. Kulcak! you are my Angel.
